Thoughts for the Spring Equinox

Every afternoon, once the sun is out and the ground is nice and warm, I walk out to see which new flower bulb is popping up.

In a flurry of activity in October, my kids and I dug up a section in the front yard, and planted lots of bulbs. Daffodils and tulips, crocuses and hyacinth. We’ve still had snow and cold the past few weeks, but the snowdrops have already bloomed, and each day there is one more crocus that is ready to pop open.

Although many (most? all?) of us dislike it, I think Daylight Saving Time is also a switch to get us ready for spring. Suddenly there is still plenty of light once we get home from school and work, and it’s easy to take a few more minutes outside to enjoy it. Last night I went out to take a quick picture of crocus, and found myself starting to till one of the vegetable beds.

This Sunday is the Spring Equinox, and I look forward to enjoying the sunlight and all the first signs of spring. I hope you do, too.
